Editorial Team Member – The National Housing Institute – Montclair, NJ

Shelterforce magazine (www.shelterforce.org), the voice of community development, is seeking a sharp, organized, detail-oriented, flexible, cause-driven person to join our small editorial staff.

We: are a 40-year-old nonprofit that publishes both online and in print, serving practitioners working in the fields of affordable housing, community development and reinvestment, community organizing, community planning, creative placemaking, progressive urban planning, community economic development, racial and economic equity and justice, and related fields and movements. We serve as the independent voice that connects, supports, and challenges the people doing the work on the ground. Our work is relied upon by activists, developers, policymakers, journalists, and academics.

You:

are committed to supporting work for fairness, justice, and healthy communities for all
have a demonstrated ongoing interest in and familiarity with at least some of our subject areas. Direct experience preferable.
have meaningful experience in a journalistic or editorial capacity—journalistic writing, editing, editorial management. Familiarity with AP style, Adobe InDesign, WordPress, social media, and previous magazine experience are all pluses.
are located within easy commuting distance of Montclair, N.J.
are happy to work for a small scrappy nonprofit where you may occasionally be asked to chip in on sticking labels on envelopes or represent the organization to the public and/or funders
are available for periodic travel and evening events

The position:

Is full time.
Details and compensation will vary based on fit with the candidate we select, on a range from staff writer to managing editor.
Salary will be competitive for nonprofit publications of similar size. Benefits are provided (health, vacation, paid sick days, retirement account).
