Arts Mentoring Program Coordinator – Free Arts NYC – New York, NY

Mission: Free Arts NYC provides under-served children and families with a unique combination of cradle-to-college arts education and mentoring programs that help them foster the self-confidence and resiliency needed to realize their fullest potential.

Job Summary: Supervised by the Arts Mentoring Program Manager, the Arts Mentoring Program Coordinator supports Free Arts NYC’s Arts Mentoring Program (AMP) – a school-year long, visual arts-based mentoring program engaging 200+ youth per year. AMP provides 6-13 year olds with weekly opportunities to express themselves creatively and engage with positive adult role models. Led by professional Program Facilitators (Teaching Artists), teams of volunteer mentors use theme-based curricula to guide small groups of youth through creating and discussing art projects – a process that serves as a catalyst to help youth strengthen critical communication and social skills, and build positive relationships with peers and adults.

Responsibilities:

Program Management & Administration

With the Arts Mentoring Program manager, maintains AMP management systems including planning documents and files, program calendars, expense records, etc.

Coordinates the timely preparation, distribution, and collection of enrollment paperwork to/from community partner organizations at the start of each semester.

Receives and tracks monthly youth and volunteer program attendance forms.

Holds primary responsibility for the day-to-day logistical support of AMP groups.

Supervises office volunteers and/or interns, as needed.

With the full program department staff, co-coordinates Free Arts NYC’s annual Art From the Heart participant gallery show.

Community Partnerships

Supports recruitment and outreach events on-site at community partner locations (public and charter schools, social service agencies, community centers, etc).

Attends and supports 1-2 community events per partner per program year.

Logs on-going partnership successes and challenges in annual evaluation forms.

Program Facilitator & Volunteer Management

Supports the Volunteer Team with volunteer interviews as needed (approx. 4 times per year).

Works closely with the Arts Mentoring Program Manager to place and support volunteers.

Guides volunteers through additional screening required by select partners (DOH/DOE fingerprinting, TB testing, etc).

With the Arts Mentoring Program Manager, co-leads staff and volunteer trainings.

Conducts on-site observations of Program Facilitators/Teaching Artists.

Curriculum Development

Along with the rest of the AMP team, collaborates with a Curriculum Writer to develop and contribute project ideas to the program’s semesterly theme-based visual arts curricula.

Oversees production, coordination and distribution of team contact information, program calendars, and printed curricula to staff, volunteers, and community partners.

Evaluation & Data Management

Enters semesterly program data in Salesforce and eTapesty databases.

Contributes writing and analysis to annual AMP Evaluation Reports.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

Minimum BA (or equivalent experience) in Art Education, Studio/Fine Arts or other relevant field

2+ years of experience working with under-served youth that ideally includes:

– Coordination/facilitation of visual arts programming for 6-13 year old youth, in youth development/after-school settings;

– Supervision of volunteers and/or interns;

– Data entry (prior work with eTapestry or Salesforce databases a plus).

1-2 years experience in an administrative role, nonprofit preferred

Strong track record of working in cross-cultural settings

Experience implementing positive/strengths-based youth development and/or social justice pedagogy/practices a strong plus

REQUIRED SKILLS

Proficient in Google Apps (Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc)

Excellent written and verbal communication

Outstanding organizational skills, with meticulous attention to detail

Patience and persistence to navigate public bureaucratic requirements (DOE/DOH documentation and processes)

Teamwork-oriented, flexible ethos, with a track record of successful collaboration

Growth-mindset oriented; eager to learn, welcomes feedback and regularly identifies areas for continued development

Reports To: Arts Mentoring Program Manager

Hours: Full-time/permanent; hours include some weekends and nights (flex time offered accordingly)
