Teen Choice Social Worker – Inwood House – New York, NY

Inwood House, a 185 year old child welfare and youth development organization is looking for an engaging, energetic, candidate to serve as the Teen Choice Social Worker. The Inwood House (IH) Teen Choice Social Worker is responsible for the implementation of the Teen Choice program within but not limited to Inwood House programs, including the Teen Family Learning Center, Victory House, Mother Child Foster Care, Maya’s Place and PRIME Leaders. This program offers individual and small group counseling, as well as other small group activities in the context of youth development and asset-building, focusing on the strengths of our clients and their families. The Teen Choice Program provides young people with teen pregnancy, counseling and leadership development.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with Inwood House program sites as well as community-based agencies/providers to which clients will be referred;
Run at least four groups per week and additional groups, as needed, by the program;
Keep up-to-date attendance records and record the content and process of each session on the forms provided;
Provide individual counseling and referral to students. Make reasonable efforts to follow-up on clients referred for service. Maintain a written record on each student counseled on the forms provided and record each student on a coding sheet;
Conduct outreach and make requested presentations in schools and community-based organizations. Record content and process on each presentation on the forms provided;
Keep accurate client records and statistics using the forms provided, in accordance with administrative directives for program monitoring and evaluation. Submit monthly statistics to Inwood House Research and Evaluation Department. Submit monthly program report to TC-CAPP Program Manager.. If site is funded by grants that require other record keeping, cooperate with all funding partners and maintain and submit reports in a timely fashion;
Write two narrative profiles of service at the end of each semester, which describe aspects of work with students and/or in your school setting (four per year);
Collaborate with other Teen Choice and Inwood House programs on activities and events;
Attend and actively participate in weekly staff meeting and regular supervision meetings;
Keep TC-CAPP Manager aware of work and developments at host sites;
Participate in training of staff of other agencies when requested. Participate in interpreting the program and services to Inwood House’s Board, and the community;
Attend training and relay information to colleagues during staff meetings;
Present at conferences and agency sponsored meetings to promote the Teen Choice Program;
Work collaboratively with all funders and Board Members during school/program visits;
Cooperate with researchers when any research is conducted on the Teen Choice program (provided that agency has approved our participation);

Minimum requirements:

A Masters in Social Work (MSW), LMSW/LCSW with at least one to two years experience working with youth;
Candidate should have knowledge and/or experience with group work, family work, and a commitment to working with adolescents and their families;
The worker must be able to work independently in a host setting and must be comfortable discussing issues of sexuality;
Must have a commitment to work from a strength based perspective;
Ability to work with culturally diversified individuals;
Ability to design and conduct training and on-going workshops; ability to plan events;
Must have knowledge and experience in child development and the principles of child health, sexual health education, safety, and nutrition; adult learning principles, and family dynamics;
Must be a strong communicator and have the ability to motivate others;
Must have knowledge of community resources and skills to link families with appropriate agencies and services;
Ability to establish professional boundaries and engage in professional behaviors that emulate a high level of ethics and objective/non-judgmental approaches;
Ability to lift and carry approximately 10 pounds and climb stairs;
Possess excellent organizational, verbal, written and communication skills;
Must be computer literate and have the ability to promote a positive and enthusiastic work environment;
Must be a team player and have the ability to work independently;
Candidate must be flexible-some evenings and weekend hours may be required;

Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.
