Rabbinic Assistant – B’nai Jeshurun – New York, NY

B’nai Jeshurun (BJ) is a progressive, egalitarian and inclusive synagogue community on the Upper West Side. We are looking for a bright, quick thinking and proactive professional to assist three pulpit rabbis. This is a demanding but manageable and rewarding position in a dynamic work environment for a capable and responsible candidate. Standard working hours with occasional evenings and weekends (with comp time) and shortened Friday hours for Shabbat make this a perfect position for someone looking for work/life balance in a meaningful work place. A quality candidate should also be mature, flexible, and discerning in relating to others. Lastly, a candidate must be able to communicate clearly and articulately in verbal and written forms.

Key Responsibilities

Provide all Clerical and Administrative Support to Rabbis:

Extensively manage complex schedules
Maintain strict confidentiality
Coordinate logistics and multiple calendars for high-level meetings
Triage incoming correspondence, screen calls, and act as first responder to inquiries
Manage the rabbis’ health insurance accounts
Interact with the Board of Trustees, principal volunteers, and donors
Coordinate materials, travel, and itineraries for appointments and trips
Manage personal and confidential records and communications
File, retrieve, and manage documents

Coordinate Classes, Retreats and Special Services:

Create website content and manage program registration
Edit and create printed and electronic materials for adult learning classes, retreats and religious services
Create and manage room set ups for adult learning classes, retreats and religious services
Manage budgets for retreats, special events and adult learning classes

Other:

Provide secondary support to the receptionist through occasional front-desk and switchboard coverage, distributing mail, and processing checks
Serve as the staff member on the cemetery committee: manage cemetery records, facilitate plot sales and direct interment proceedings
Provide back-up support for Life Cycles Coordinator (occasional nights/weekends)
Other duties as assigned

Experience and Skills:

BA degree and minimum of 2 years of administrative experience
Highly organized with the proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
Superb attention to detail and highly organized with ability to prioritize
High proficiency with Microsoft Office required
Experience with Raiser’s Edge or Salesforce, WordPress, and Google Apps preferred
Expert level of professional written and verbal communication skills
Strong decision making ability
Excellent interpersonal, team-building and communication skills
Ability to work in a fast paced environment, under pressure, while remaining flexible and efficient
Anticipate needs and solve problems proactively
Ability to work during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur a plus
