Executive /Administrative Assistant – Hesperian Health Guides – Berkeley, CA

Hesperian Health Guides is the nonprofit publisher of Where There Is No Doctor and other resources for grassroots health programs worldwide. Hesperian collaborates internationally with health workers and grassroots groups to develop materials for community-based health care that are accessible, medically complete, and which examine political, social, and economic causes of poor health. Comprehensive, empowering, and easy-to-use, Hesperian materials promote self-reliance and self-determination, by providing communities with the basic information to improve their health conditions. Our publications address environmental health, worker health and safety, HIV/AIDS, women’s health, midwifery, community mental health, women and children with disabilities, health worker training, and dentistry. Our open copyright policy has led to Hesperian materials being translated into more than 100 languages.

Current projects include books on workers’ health, organizing for women’s right to health, and support for children living with HIV.

Hesperian is seeking an Executive/Administrative Assistant to provide support to the Executive Director. The position includes periodic support to Fundraising, Marketing and Digital efforts. Additionally, there are opportunities for participation in the book development process.

This is a full time position.

Responsibilities include:

Provide support to Executive Director, including managing day to day calendar and scheduling appointments
Assist ED in scheduling, organizing, and documenting Staff and Board meetings
Assist ED in preparing travel and presentations conferences and other travel for Hesperian
Manage recruitment and orientations for new staff, work study students, interns, and volunteers
Coordinate small events and meetings
Support promotional outreach events
Assist with communications tasks as needed
Support the Business Manager in monitoring and maintaining administrative functions of the office
General public relations including manage correspondence and requests for information
Assist ED in communications with partner organizations around the world
Participate actively in Hesperian’s staff meetings, retreats and organizational planning processes.
Database coordination

Qualifications:

Highly organized
Able to work with little supervision
Excellent oral and written communication skills
A sense of humor, positive attitude, resourcefulness, and enthusiasm for Hesperian’s mission are important

Spanish language skills preferred
Excellent detail orientation, multi-tasking ability and ability to shift priorities quickly
Strong follow-through skills and ability to meet deadlines.
Excellent ability to communicate with staff at all levels of the organization and with volunteers, Board members and Hesperian supporters
Friendly, responsible, timely and reliable
Computer skills with experience in MS Office, Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Drive
A commitment to social and economic justice and/or an interest or background in public health is greatly valued, as is experience in “developing” countries
