Senior Development Officer, Foundations – Hesperian Health Guides – Berkeley, CA

Position Overview

Hesperian Health Guides seeks a Senior Development Officer to lead our efforts to raise funds from institutional sources including private foundations and government sources. This position supervises a Foundations Development Associate and occasional contract grant writers, and works closely with the Executive Director and Hesperian board members to raise an average of $1.2 million annually. This position is part of a fundraising team that also includes a Manager of Individual Giving and two Development Associates.

Our ideal candidate is an experienced development professional with 5 or more years of non-profit fundraising experience, and a proven track record of success with all aspects of foundation fundraising including: strategy development, research, cultivation and stewardship, development of complex grant proposals and budgets. This is a position with room for growth. Candidates who have the drive to help us take this international organization to the next level will be a welcome addition to the team.

This is a full-time position and reports to the Executive Director.

Hesperian Health Guides is a nonprofit publisher of international health resources and materials. Best known for the publication, Where There Is No Doctor, Hesperian has worked to make life-saving health information readily available to resource-poor communities throughout the world since 1973. Today, Doctor and additional Hesperian guides on women’s health, environmental health, early childhood development, and more are available in over 80 languages and are used by community health workers and advocates to train, educate, and empower individuals and communities worldwide. Hesperian is based in Berkeley, CA.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

Lead the identification, research, cultivation, outreach, stewardship and management of Hesperian’s institutional funding portfolio.
Support the Executive Director, members of board of directors, and other staff in outreach and cultivation efforts with potential funding sources.
Develop proposals, LOIs, concept papers, and other correspondence with existing and potential institutional funders that are tailored to each funder based on their priorities and requirements.
Supervise the work of the Foundations Development Associate.
Work closely with Hesperian program staff to gather information about status, accomplishments, and challenges of each project for reporting and for proposal development and reporting.

Maintain up-to-date information on funder communications, deadlines, and reporting requirements Develop annual fundraising plans, in coordination with the Executive Director including strategies and goals for acquiring, renewing and generating support from institutional funders.

QUALIFICATIONS/ REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
Five or more years of nonprofit fundraising experience
Proven track record of successful foundation fundraising and of achieving revenue targets
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Experience developing and managing fundraising goals and budgets
Excellent computer skills (proficiency in Word and Excel); experience with donor database programs preferred
Highly organized, with superb attention to detail, and able to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Enthusiasm for Hesperian’s work, mission and philosophy
Health or international development experience strongly preferred
Prior experience living and working overseas a plus

Excellent writing skills with 4 to 5 years of grant writing experience
