Public Relations Manager – SF Marin Food Bank – San Francisco, CA

The Food Bank’s mission is to end hunger in San Francisco and Marin. This year, we will distribute 47 million pounds of food – enough for more than 107,000 meals each day. We partner with more than 450 organizations – including 240 neighborhood pantries – to distribute food to low-income residents of San Francisco and Marin counties. PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Public Relations Manager leads the development and implementation of media strategies that will promote the work and raise the public visibility of the Food Bank while also increasing awareness about the issue of hunger. Serves as primary media relations contact for the Food Bank, engaging other staff as needed. Works collaboratively as a member of the Communications team to support story and content development, review and content development. Collaborates closely with the Executive Director to advance the Food Bank’s research and policy work with strategic use of media.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Media relations

Point of contact for all media inquiries, managing media visits, filming opportunities, and spokesperson needs
Write and distribute SFMFB press releases; review and/or participate in collaborative press releases
Establish and maintain relationships with local media; expand our touch points to new media including blogs and online newspapers and magazines
Develop stories and pitches; obtain media placement
Develop speaking opportunities and prepare talking points for those engagements
Coordinate shared media and PR opportunities with BAFB and Feeding America
Monitor and report media coverage

Communications

Interview program participants and coordinators, staff and supporters; develop compelling stories to support marketing and fundraising efforts
Develop copy for a variety of sources, including website, blog, newsletters, and reports
Manage review and copyediting requests from across the organization
Post and participate in social media strategy

QUALIFICIATIONS:

Minimum of five years of professional experience in media, journalism or public relations. Experience working in a newspaper and/or cause-oriented organizations preferred.
B.A. in journalism, communications, media or related field.
Solid writing skills. Excellent speaking skills with ability to think on your feet and stay on message when questioned or challenged.
Available to respond to media inquiries and participate in Food Bank media events during evenings and weekends as necessary, with a concentrated effort during November and December including holidays.
Established relationships with members of the media community in San Francisco a plus. Ability to nurture existing media relationships while forging new ones.
Strong interpersonal skills, interacting well with individuals (staff, volunteers, and clients) from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds in a culturally diverse environment.
Well-organized with exceptional project and deadline management abilities. Easily adaptable to changing circumstances.
Ability to work effectively in a team setting, think creatively and be a problem solver.
Efficient using Microsoft Office and electronic publishing software.
