Promotions & Marketing Intern(Unpaid)

Pacific Science Center’s award-winning, interactive programs reach more than 1.3 million people around the state each year — in their communities, classrooms and on our campus. Summer is particularly busy as our guest numbers rise and our presence at local events increase. The promotional demands within our Marketing department also rise in the summer. Our Marketing department has an exciting internship opportunity for a student interested in developing their promotions and marketing experience.

The Promotions & Marketing Intern will help strategize promotional event attendance, support event volunteers and market the Science Center at said events amongst other responsibilities. At the internship’s conclusion, the intern should have gained valuable promotions and marketing skills while strengthening their resume. This is a great opportunity for students who want to positively impact a nonprofit while exploring a career in Promotions and Marketing. Interns may also receive college credit depending on their school’s requirements and guidelines.

Reports To: Education Marketing Coordinator
Position Start Date: June 2015
Position End Date:Minimum of 10-weeks. Ideal candidates will commit through the end of summer
Time Commitment:9-15 hours a week, split between weekend event work and weekday work in the office. Availability on Tuesday mornings is also required.

Job Duties

Manage the planning associated with Pacific Science Center’s presence at off-site fairs, parades and events (past events include Youngershoot at Bumbershoot, Seafair Milk Carton Derby and more)
Serve as point of contact for external fair, festival and event organizers
Effectively orient and schedule event volunteers that help staff off-site events
Positively represent the Science Center at off-site events
Manage set-up and tear-down at off-site events
Work with Graphic Design team to create summer promotional collateral
Create calendar listings and contribute to Pacific Science Center’s weekly e-newsletter (100,000+ recipients)
Create content for the summer events online webpage throughout the summer
Brainstorm cost-effective guerrilla marketing tactics that can be implemented throughout the summer
Participate in weekly Marketing & Communications Division meetings (held on Tuesday mornings)
Assist as needed with department’s administrative tasks
Other duties as assigned

Develop administrative and creativity skills associated with working in a busy Marketing department
Demonstrate promotions planning and leadership skills while working in a team environment
Gain insight into the inner-workings of a large nonprofit educational institution

Position Requirements

Candidates must be current college students
Flexible and willing to take on a variety of tasks
High level of energy, enthusiasm and initiative
Works well independently, as well as part of a team and can react accordingly to the Science Center’s fast-paced nature
Strong customer service skills and excellent written and oral communication skills
Pass a criminal background check
Provide 3 references
Candidates working towards a degree in Marketing, Public Relations or Communications strongly preferred
Experience in promotional events a plus
Must be willing to work for a few hours most weekends
