Organization Overview:

Shea Yeleen (SY) is a mission-driven social enterprise that sells high-quality, unrefined shea butter products. We promote sustainable economic development in rural sub-Saharan Africa, empower and train women-owned shea butter cooperatives, and educate consumers in the U.S. about natural beauty care products and fair trade. We are currently seeking an intern to assist with activities related to communication and marketing.

Job Duration:

3 months including summer, fall, and spring semesters. Start-date and end-date are flexible. This is an unpaid part-time position.

Accountability:

The Marketing and Social Networking Intern reports directly to the CEO.

Responsibilities

Communication

a) Prepare press releases, distribute press releases, and track press related to Shea Yeleen

b) Assist with the development and updating of media lists and other data lists

c) Maintain contact between Shea Yeleen and media sources

d) Assist in greater awareness of Shea Yeleen activities on social networking sites, such as Facebook, through linking and formal advertising programs

e) Promote Shea Yeleen spokespersons to the media as sources of expert commentary on trade and women in rural West Africa

f) Maintain email lists for editors, bloggers, and TV radio producers; write press releases and distribute them on lists

g) Assist with gaining greater linkage between Shea Yeleen blog and other major blog sites, assist with Search Engine Optimization tasks

h) Handle writing assignments for the website, newsletter, blog, and promotional literature, and promote Shea Yeleen video documentaries to the media and on video sharing sites

Marketing

Research market data and develop specific approaches to marketing Shea Yeleen products

Internship Deliverables

a) Excel spreadsheet of bloggers, TV & radio producers, editors, and other media contacts b) Newsletters c) Increase engagement on social media platforms d) Regular blog and social media status updates

Qualifications

a) Commitment to women’s rights, justice and economic development b) Excellent verbal and written communication c) Completed a minimum of two years of undergraduate coursework in a related field; preference given to applicants with technical or multi-media knowledge, prior communications experience/ knowledge or communications degrees d) Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and Internet research e) Ability to work independently and as a member of a team f) Attention to detail g) Knowledge of WordPress HTML/Web Design strongly preferred

Commitment of 10-15 hours a week
