Marketing & Communications Director – Silverdale – Kitsap Humane Society

Kitsap Humane Society has been in a growth mode: we have been expanding our animal welfare programs and services, saving and adopting out more animals, and working hard to grow our fundraising efforts. We also anticipate launching a large capital campaign to dramatically expand and enhance our shelter facilities. In line with this growth, KHS seeks a Marketing and Communications Director to lead both the creation and implementation of a marketing, communication and public relations strategy to further advance public awareness of KHS’ mission at the local and regional level, drive revenue growth of shelter programs, support and elevate KHS fundraising programs and events, and position KHS for our proposed capital project . The ideal candidate will be both creative, strategic, organized and be able to work collaboratively and effectively with a range of constituent groups, both internally and externally. The candidate will also demonstrate a strong passion for animals and our animal welfare mission.

Reports To: Executive Director, but also accountable to the Director of Animal Welfare and Director of Donors Relations as they are the key internal leaders and strategic partners.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Overall strategy and planning:
Develop and implement the overall Marketing/Communications strategy and philosophy for the organization, including KHS’ social media strategy
Develop a (brief) annual marketing plan and strategy for presentation to KHS’ management and Board, with measurable goals and tactics in all key areas.
Work as a strategic leader and partner with KHS’ management team to advance the marketing and communications needs and goals of their respective areas

Branding:
Promote continued effective development and consistency of KHS’ brand and image
Develop and implement new and effective ways and tools to promote KHS’ brand
Build off of KHS existing graphics platform to ensure standardization of look on all collateral pieces, display materials and web presence both internally and externally.

Social media, email and web communications:
Provide leadership and direction to KHS’ social media strategy and email (i.e. e-blast) strategy. Expand and build on KHS’ existing social media utilization and positioning.
Bring greater segmentation and focus to use of social media and e-communications
Use analytics to measure the impact of various social media and e-communications approaches, and develop modified strategies and segmentation building off those analytics and metric tools.
Manage the branding, content and look of KHS’ web presence. Oversee the updating of the site by the Creative Content/Graphic Design Coordinator and other designated web editors
Develop new content, stories and positioning for social media, external media and KHS’ website.
Serve as strategic lead for KHS’ electronic newsletter, Shelter Tails. Manage content, editorial list, design and distribution. Work with Development Department to stimulate donor support.

Public relations and media:
Serve as a primary media contact person for KHS .
Send routine and periodic fact sheets, news releases, scripts, etc., for distribution to media.
Confer with the ED and Director of Animal Welfare on the content and timing of media stories of greater strategic significance or stories of a potentially controversial nature for KHS.
Track and report media coverage on all PR releases.

Overall implementation and coordination of KHS’ marketing, communications and public relations efforts:
Develop the necessary content and schedules to meet organization’s marketing and communications requirements.
Oversee coordination of KHS monthly communication calendar.
Ensure that marketing and PR efforts are implemented in a timely, effective fashion.
Ensure continuity of messaging to targeted communities and consistency in the overall KHS “voice.”
Ensure that the department generates promotional and collateral materials in quality and timely fashion to support KHS’ shelter programs and KHS’ development and event programs
Provide oversight/management of KHS’ marketing budget. Evaluate ROI of various marketing activities and makes recommendations for the most strategic use of marketing resources.

Serve as an ambassador for KHS:
Build new relationships in the community for the purpose of promoting KHS
Help build and strengthen relationships with Board members, key volunteers and donors
Effectively engage key stakeholders where possible in KHS marketing/communications efforts
Regularly attend KHS Board meetings a member of KHS’ management team. Attend specified Board committee meetings as requested, e.g. Development Committee or Event Committees.
Attend and provide on-site support to all major KHS events

Strategic business partner on revenue growth:
Work as a strategic partner with shelter leadership, KHS’ development leadership, and KHS Events Manager and Volunteer Chairs to develop and implement marketing tools and strategies to drive revenue growth in the following areas:
Earned revenue growth from shelter operations (e.g. adoption revenue)
Philanthropic revenue growth, both annual and capital campaign
Event revenue growth
Work as a strategic partner with the Director of Donor Relations and Executive Director to drive effective marketing of KHS’ future capital campaign

Evaluation and modification of marketing strategies:
Constantly look for new, better ways to enhance KHS marketing and communications strategies
Conduct market research (informal and/or formal) and brings other analytical tools to assess market penetration and segmentation to provide analytical insight to KHS’ social media, e-communications, print and media strategies
Develop and produce the KHS Annual Report and other key organizational print or electronic reports as needed, in collaboration with the ED, Director of Animal Welfare and Director of Donor Relations.

Education and Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, marketing, nonprofit administration or related field.
Three or more years experience in marketing, communications, public relations

Hours and Compensation

Full time position with benefits.
Competitive compensation in nonprofit sector: Upper $40’s to slightly higher.
