Director of Development – LRNG by Collective Shift – Chicago, IL

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and working closely with the Board of Directors, the Director of Development provides leadership, strategic direction, oversight, coordination and priority setting for Collective Shift’s annual operational fundraising programs. The Director will forge and maintain new relationships to build Collective Shift’s visibility, impact, and financial resources. The Director is responsible for the solicitation of major gifts, government grants, corporate and foundation support. Collective Shift’s target for 2016 is $6M.

The Director serves as an ambassador for the organization and supports senior staff to build relationships to advance the organization’s position with relevant constituents, as well as to drive broader awareness and donor support for the organization. This position may manage development support staff plus contractors and volunteers.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Develop and implement long and short term strategies to achieve earned and contributed income goals; an innovative thinker, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and output.
Identify, solicit, and cultivate prospective corporate, foundation, and individual donors
Demonstrated ability to build and leverage relationships with donors, community and strategic partners; cultivating and building long-term relationships to achieve fundraising goals
Lead the planning and execution of all fundraising programs, strategies, tactics and programs including annual giving, corporate and foundation solicitation, sponsorship requests and fundraising events.
Create and manage the fundraising budget for revenues and expenses each fiscal year.
Guide and support Board Committee Chairs to set agendas and facilitate the work of the Board’s Development and Governance Committees.
Experience in oversight of planning, writing, editing, and production of letters of introduction, applications, grant proposals, funding requests, content for publications, press releases, websites, mailings, email outreach, reports, newsletters, correspondence, monthly and annual reports and for external reporting, including Guidestar and IRS.
Solicit corporate sponsorships and partnerships for special events, performance and program underwriting, and naming opportunities.
Oversee staff or volunteers in the management of gift accounting and donor recognition, processing and reporting of gifts and donations, and the management of the Tessitura database.

Minimum Qualifications

10 years’ progressively responsible experience in developing and implementing fundraising programs for a nonprofit;
Demonstrated success in fundraising from individuals, corporations, and foundations;
Proven track record of significant fundraising success in the millions of dollars
Strong interest in and appreciation for the innovative educational platforms;
Demonstrated supervisorial, motivational, and organizational skills;
Excellent communication and presentation skills, including an ability to speak clearly to groups of any size and various audiences, and an ability listen to and engage staff, board, and donors;
Be a skilled writer who is able to execute concise and effective prose used in proposals and grant applications, as well as write persuasively for donor and fundraising communications;
Strong computer skills, including familiarity and ease using Microsoft Office and fundraising databases such as Salesforce.
Ability to build relationships and resolve conflicts;
Willingness to provide clear information required by others to make decisions;
Good time estimating and prioritizing skills.
Ability to take initiative in a team context; and
Strong collaboration skills and experience working with distributed interdisciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will also have the following preferred prior experience. skills and dispositions:

A successful Development Director will be mission aligned, innovative, curious, and driven to reach clear financial outcomes. This individual will need to be a motivated self-starter that is solution-oriented and thrives in goal-oriented environments.
Knowledge of Salesforce or similar databases a plus.

Working Conditions
This position generally requires working in an office environment with computers. Some travel is required, as is the ability and willingness to work occasional nights and weekends to cultivate donors and attend events on behalf of Collective Shift.

Primary Location
This position will be based in Chicago, IL or Redwood City, CA
