Job Summary:

This is a unique opportunity to help create and grow a new after school program in the heart of the South Bronx. With an unprecedented level of collaboration between the school and our program, we are out to build an exemplary program that focuses on growing the hearts and minds of our students. In the early stages of growth, we believe there is much work to be done, and we are looking to invite on to our team like-minded individuals who are looking for a rewarding challenge. Strong candidates take initiative, are open to coaching, and are constantly looking for ways for all of us to improve. Strong understanding of middle school youth, group dynamics and classroom management are a must.

Under the direct supervision of the After School Program Director and Program Assistant, the Group Leader will co-supervise a group of middle school students as they participate in academic and enrichment after school program activities.

Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the After School Program Director, and working in conjunction with other staff, supervise assigned group of 20 to 28 middle school students during after school program hours;
Maintain attendance log for assigned group;
Maintain Observation and Incidents logs for group;
Plan and leadacademic activities during scheduled academic period;
Plan and lead projects that foster academic, emotional, cultural and artistic growth;
Encourage students to positively participate in all after school programming and activities;
Assist in the planning and implementation of special events;
Attend all required staff/planning meetings;
Seek out and take onspecial assignments consistent with the goals and objectives of the after school program.

Qualifications:

Minimum two years’ professional experience working with children in a classroom, after school, or community based environment leading/organizing group activities. Substantial volunteer work will be considered;
Demonstrated interest in the field of education, child development or literacy;
Able to work Monday-Thursday from 4-6 and Fridays 1-6
Well organized, able to work both independently and collaboratively;
Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus;
Current, active college enrollment or college degree preferred;
Previous work experience in low-income communities.
