Executive Director – Discover Roxbury – Roxbury, MA

BACKGROUND

Discover Roxbury is a 501(c)3 community-based non-profit organization that promotes civic engagement and economic development of the Boston neighborhood of Roxbury through tours, events, and school visits that leverage the arts, culture, and history of the neighborhood.

The organization seeks a full time Executive Director with at least 3 years of experience in the nonprofit field and first-hand knowledge of budgeting, fundraising and strategic planning. The Executive Director is responsible for the delivery of high quality programs and services around the neighborhood of Roxbury, as well as the financial well-being and management of various arts and educational programming. The Executive Director collaborates closely with the Chair(s) and Treasurer of the Board of Directors to advance the growth of the organization, and helps provide leadership and vision to the Board on ways to build upon the organization’s legacy and deepen its relevance and distinctiveness in Roxbury and around Boston.

The ideal candidate will be a creative, visionary person, have excellent communication skills, and have the ability to manage and inspire office staff, seasonal staff, local artists, and community partners, and the community at large. The Executive Director must be perceptive of changing circumstances around the neighborhood and agile in adapting to them. The ideal candidate will also thrive in situations requiring the cultivation of strategic partnerships with individuals and institutions in Roxbury, around Boston, and beyond. Event planning and fundraising experience are a plus. Some work on evenings and Saturdays is required, particularly during late spring and summer.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Leadership & Management

Ensure ongoing local programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals.

Actively engage and energize volunteers, board members, event committees, alumni, partnering organizations, and funders.

Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors: serve as ex-officio of each committee, seek and build board involvement with strategic direction for both ongoing local operations.

Lead, coach, develop, and retain a high-performance senior management team.

Ensure effective systems to track scaling progress, and regularly evaluate program components, so as to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders, and other constituents.

Fundraising

Research grant opportunities, then write and submit proposals.

Oversee the planning and implementation of Discover Roxbury’s two annual fundraisers: the Black & White Party in March and Heart of the Hub in October.

Oversee sales of ads for the ArtROX! Season Guide and the Heart of the Hub program book.

Outreach

Identify and contact potential new community and citywide partners.

Maintain Discover Roxbury’s presence at networking events.

Write and post job descriptions for staff and interns.

Participate in community and citywide networks (Roxbury Cultural Network, Boston Culture Change Network, Arts Services Coalition).

Marketing

Oversee and review press releases and organization newsletters prior to transmission.

Design and/or work with graphic designers to produce printed materials.

Contact and negotiate with printer.

Oversee distribution of print materials.

Oversee website and social media updates.

Develop a media presence in broadcast and print media by promoting Discover Roxbury’s events to the media, and being a source on trending news in Roxbury.

Prepare for and participate in conferences and trade shows that highlight Discover Roxbury’s mission and programming.

Administrative

Work cohesively with the Board of Directors to pursue aggressive fundraising and board development goals.

Responsible for recruitment, hiring, management, and evaluation of all staff and volunteers.

Analyze and summarize evaluations of programming.

Write the annual report.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Budget and grant writing experience.

Development and fundraising experience.

Experience in program/event development and implementation.

Minimum 3 years supervisory experience.

Ability to supervise staff.

Strategically build teams of community partners.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Ability to work with youth, families, and adults from a variety of backgrounds.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Familiarity with social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn), office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and design software (Photoshop, InDesign).

Experience in marketing, public, and media relations.

IDEAL

BA/BS degree in arts management, nonprofit management, and/or marketing.

Direct experience working with civic organizations and communities of artists.

At least one season of event planning experience.

Valid driver’s license.

Knowledge of Salesforce.

Familiarity with biking and walking around Roxbury.

Familiarity with Roxbury’s diverse neighborhoods and communities.

Commitment to building a sustainable and more livable Roxbury.
