Events / Development Associate – The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association – Columbus, OH

The Events & Development Associate is an integral part of the Chapter’s development staff. This person serves as the lead organizer for the Chapter’s Walk to Defeat ALS® in Columbus and Southeast Ohio. This person also will manage aspects of the Chapter’s Community Partner Events, ALS Awareness Events and other events, and is responsible for helping achieve budgeted annual revenue targets through these events.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Overall Planning – Assist in developing and implementing the annual Walk to Defeat ALS strategic plan. Plan includes revenue targets, expense budget and a detailed timeline of activities and deadlines for all activities noted below.

Event Coordination – Oversee the coordination of all event activities and logistics, including managing the event online registration site through Convio; planning kick-off and awards events; handling all logistics (securing facilities, permits, entertainment, food, etc.); updating and ordering all collateral materials; coordinating mailings; monitoring Walk dashboard and metrics; thanking attendees and volunteers in a timely manner; monitoring budget; and providing reports to Development Director.

Walk Team Recruitment and Team Building – Identify new Walk team captains and participants and encourage them to be involved. Serve as the point of contact for Walk team captains and individual participants. Coach Walk team captains and participants to reach revenue targets. (Coaching includes face-to-face meetings to discuss fundraising plans and tips, website instruction, goal setting, and accountability to goals, motivation and support.) Develop creative ways to engage participants, particularly patient families and lapsed teams. Build positive and lasting relationships on behalf of The ALS Association to achieve revenue and non-revenue goals.

Sponsorship – Assist Development Director and Events & Development Coordinator with re-engaging and securing past sponsors; identifying new prospects; preparing and updating necessary materials and ensuring that all sponsorship benefits are provided as promised. Assist with corporate kick-offs, informational and recruitment presentations. Identify and solicit companies for in-kind donations.

Volunteer Recruitment and Management –Develop and lead Walk committee of volunteers to assist in putting on the Walk as well as event-day volunteers; assure key Committee positions are filled and recruit new volunteers as needed. Schedule meetings and oversee committee work to assure goals are achieved. Provide direction on assignments and empower volunteers of all levels to assist with revenue and non-revenue generating activities. Provide volunteers with clear and concise objectives, expectations, job descriptions and goals, and encourage and motivate them to be successful. Facilitate monthly committee meetings and oversee and maintain timely communication with committee members.

Walk Supplemental Events – Coordinate and manage other events that support the Walks, such as kick-offs, Team Week and awards celebrations. Communicate with constituents and volunteers to ensure events reach targeted attendance, revenue and cultivation objectives.

Marketing and Communication – Assist Development Director with public relations activities to generate awareness of the Walk and our organization through TV, radio, social media and print communications. Assist in creating and implementing social media communication plan to cultivate, educate and support constituents; manage the chapter’s Walk Facebook page.

Financial Management and Reporting – Participate in setting annual budget for Walk-related expenses and ensure Walk expenses stay within budget. Submit national reports to help direct fundraising activities. Prepare additional reports for chapter leadership to understand financial direction of Walk.

Community Partner Events – Coordinate the Chapter’s third-party events (Community Partner Events or CPEs). Organize all applications, pre- and post-event documents, records of funds raised and other relevant materials and information. Work to develop and foster lasting relationships with CPE planners in Columbus. Communicate with chapter board and staff accordingly about relevant events.

ALS Awareness Events – Coordinate assigned ALS Awareness Events. Support Events & Development Coordinator to successfully execute these events.

Administrative and Other Functions – Assist with other development and fundraising activities as needed. Ensure that all materials provided and utilized for Walks are in accordance with National policy and best practices. Maintain confidential administrative filing and retrieval system for interrelated files and records. Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

1-2 years’ experience in fundraising and event planning (experience with walks and online fundraising preferred).

College degree or equivalent work experience; volunteer management experience preferred.

Comprehensive computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office (prior experience with donor management software preferred).

Experience managing social media platforms preferred

Ability to lift up to 25 pounds to load and unload (with volunteer help) supplies from truck that transports Walk-day supplies to three walks for three consecutive weekends.

Highly organized, reliable and resourceful self-starter who is results-oriented with a commitment to accountability, detail and follow-through.

Skilled communicator with superior interpersonal, verbal and written skills.

Strong organizational and problem solving skills.

Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines with evolving priorities.

High level of integrity and diplomacy; ability to handle and maintain confidential information.

Analyzes information and makes timely, appropriate decisions

Team player with the ability to build rapport with a wide range of people, including community businesses and professionals, volunteers, patients and caregivers, and all ALS associates

A comfort-level and understanding for people and families dealing with serious medical conditions

Ability to travel and work weekends as required to perform job duties; a valid driver’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The person in this position will work from the Chapter’s main office located at 1170 Old Henderson Road, Columbus, OH 43220

Normal work hours are 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, however, flexibility is required in order to accommodate committee meetings, event prep, set-up, etc.

Travel by car is required to attend meetings within Chapter territory.
