Director of Philanthrophy – Liberty Hill Foundation – Los Angeles, CA

The Director of Philanthropy will be a key leader to promote social change philanthropy through Liberty Hill’s unique programs, including Donor Advised Funds and giving circles. The ideal Director of Philanthropy is creative, entrepreneurial, relational, and committed to promoting social change philanthropy in Los Angeles. The ideal candidate is well versed in the technicalities and operations of a Donor Advised fund program, while being able to communicate compellingly in print and in person about the benefits of a DA fund. Strong relationships with our DA account holders and giving circle leaders are critical to the success of this new endeavor. A keen understanding of the motivations and interests of high net worth individuals and/or those who have a passion for social justice is essential. The Chief Development Officer is both a philanthropic advisor to and organizer of donor activists. We seek a dedicated, experienced professional who can stretch limited resources. The ideal candidate has experience in individual giving, including planned giving and strategic donor engagement events.

POSITION SUMMARY

Directs and provides leadership to maintain and grow the Donor Services Program infrastructure (comprising Donor Advised, Giving Circles, Restricted Funds and the like). Ensures the execution of tasks consistent with the agency’s Strategic Plan, particularly promoting social change philanthropy, launching and supporting giving circles, understanding the social change landscape in the LA region and supporting donors in making a lasting impact through their giving and activism.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Primary areas of responsibility and tasks that may typically be assigned include but are not limited to:

Develops and implements an ambitious marketing plan to grow our donor services programs.
Serves as philanthropic advisor to DA account holders and giving circle leaders.
Recommends and designs procedures for administration of DA Funds, giving circles, scholarship funds and restricted funds. Explores and recommends new types of philanthropic vehicles in furtherance of the Foundation’s vision and mission.
Develops grant dockets for donor advisors, along with planning for donor advisor meetings, potential grantee organization research and site visits.
Provides leadership for all stages of grants decision-making for all restricted funds and donor circles.

With the CDO, ensures compliance with laws and regulations related to donor advised funds.
Supervises one or more Donor Services and/or Data Assistants. Supervises department volunteers as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (or equivalent combination of education, training and experience).
Five to Seven years’ experience in donor service and grantmaking within a non-profit environment.
Deep understanding of donor-advised programs, IRS rules, structure and oversight.
Computer proficiency in Windows operating system and MS Office software including Word and Excel. Ability to operate Internet applications and email as well as external vendors’ and proprietary software programs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Manual dexterity for operating a computer keyboard, printers, facsimile machine, photocopier, calculator and/or ten-key adding machine.
Ability to lift up to 15 pounds.

Ability to sit at a desk or conference table for extended periods of time within an office environment.
