Director of Community Relations / Fundraising – Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing (APAH)

Summary Description

The Director of Community Relations and Fundraising is responsible for raising funds through grants, individual contributions and special events and building awareness and support for APAH and its mission in the community. The Director supervises the Communications and Development Associate and is a part of the senior leadership at APAH.

Responsibilities

Fundraising

Plan and execute annual fundraising efforts, including writing and preparing appeals to individuals, organizations and corporations; overseeing the database; and, working on major gifts solicitations and planned giving. Cultivate relationships with organizations and groups to expand APAH’s potential donor base (e.g. corporations and local businesses, faith-based groups, volunteer groups, giving circles, civic associations etc.)
Prepare and submit proposals for grant support and awards, including CDBG and United Way. Maintain and enhance procedures for accurate grant reporting, tracking implementation and measuring outcomes in accordance with funder requirements. Submit all grant reports and facilitate meetings with current and potential funders.
Ongoing communication and coordination with other departments at APAH to understand funding needs in Real Estate Development, Resident Services, Operations and Asset Management to ensure that any restricted grant funding aligns with APAH’s goals, needs and overall strategic plan.
Plan and execute a major fundraising event every year with these goals: Raise financial support from partners and supporters; honor a recognized champion of affordable housing; and, increase visibility for APAH and its mission. Plan and execute periodic additional events, such as ground breaking and grand openings.

Communications and Community Awareness

Implement and revise APAH’s communications plan to target key audiences with appropriate messages, benchmarks and timelines to increase visibility and to support APAH’s mission. Maintain and enhance APAH’s communication tools including news releases, print materials, PowerPoint presentations. Serve as editor of the monthly APAH eNews. Initiate and assist President/CEO response to media queries.
Overall responsibility for maintaining APAH’s website to assure that it is useful for APAH’s primary audiences. Introduce social media, as appropriate, to introduce APAH’s message to new audiences.
Create collateral materials to strengthen APAH’s brand and build recognition for APAH’s mission. Create marketing materials in support of development proposals, fundraising, special events and as needed.
Organize special events and use other tools to increase community awareness in the community, among housing-related organizations, elected and Arlington County officials and other targeted audiences, through participation, communication and advocacy.

Other duties

Serve as staff liaison to the Community Resources and Relations Committee. Prepare briefing packages and attend staff and Board meetings.
Maintain a positive, cooperative and close working relationship with staff, the Board of Directors.
Ongoing coordination with volunteer manager(s) to ensure consistent messaging.
Travel to special events, trainings, and other programs as requested.

Qualifications

BA/BS degree and at least ten years of experience, with increasing responsibilities and accomplishments in the fields of fundraising, grant writing, communications, event planning and marketing. Demonstrated ability to reach donors and sponsors, to coordinate large events and to secure grant funding.
Excellent written and oral communication skills. Good eye for graphic and website design. Able to craft effective communication pieces for donors, supporters, funders and the public. Working knowledge of printed, video and social media tools to effectively communicate APAH’s message to key audiences.
Experience increasing numbers of individual donors or with the Benevon Model a plus.
Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks, matters, issues, and assignments to achieve desirable outcomes on time and on budget. Detail oriented.
Knowledge of Arlington and the Arlington community preferred including local government, nonprofits, citizen organizations, faith-based community and related organizations
Outgoing, engaging and effective at working with and through staff, board members, community organizations and external partners to secure support for APAH’s mission and goals. Ethical, results-driven individual with a sense of humor. Able to work in a small, bustling, nonprofit office environment.
Successful experience in non-profit management, operating and overseeing programs and supervising staff.
Excellent computer skills including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and social media.
Knowledge of affordable housing programs preferred.
Appreciation for the mission of the organization a must.
