Director, Finance / Accounting – Hydrocephalus Association – Bethesda, MD

Position Overview

Reporting to the Hydrocephalus Association CEO and serving as a core member of the Management Team, the Director, Finance & Accounting, is responsible for the overall management and operation of the financial and accounting functions of the Hydrocephalus Association. Included among these responsibilities are all functions associated with financial reporting and analysis, budgeting, investments review, cash management and the audit process. Serves as the full charge accountant for the Association.

On a management and strategy level, this position partners with the CEO and volunteer leadership in financial planning activities. Additionally, the Director assists in the design, implementation, and documentation of policies and procedures that meet the needs of internal and external customers and investigates opportunities for improving and further automating existing accounting, budgeting and recording systems, and recommends improvements to current financial strategies of the Association.

The Director conducts all accounting activities, reconciles monthly bank statements, maintains check registers for all accounts, reviews batch activity and prepares and posts monthly general ledger journal entries. Director will maintain accurate accounting records and recommend internal controls in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. S/he prepares accounting-related reports and analysis for presentation to the Treasurer, CEO, Board of Directors and other audiences.The Director will serve as liaison with the audit firm, conduct fiscal year closing and coordinate annual independent audit of the Association’s financial operations. The Director will play a lead role in the preparation of the annual budget by preparing budget worksheets, identifying and projecting future costs, and preparing the final budget. S/he will monitor cash management system, including cash flow projections, investment positions, and cash disbursements.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent experience required. CPA and/or Master’s in Business Administration desired. Seven years or more of relevant experience including financial accounting controls, processes and procedures, preferably working for a non-profit health charity. Five years of experience in financial analysis and forecasting methods desired. Candidate must have extensive knowledge of generally accepted fund accounting principles and practices as they relate to non-profit organizations, thorough knowledge of budget preparation, federal grants and contracts, cash flow projections, and financial analysis as well as a strong understanding and working knowledge of computer accounting systems and Microsoft Office Suite; Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong work ethic; results-oriented and self-motivated. Ability to travel and to conduct limited evening and weekend work. A self-motivated team player with the ability to work in an organization with a strong team culture and collaborative approach to working with volunteers and co-workers in meeting goals.
